Looking for a VR game that gives you intimacy as well as just sex-simulation?
VR Kanojo is a Japanese eroge game developed for English language which gives players the chance to form a relationship with their very own ‘girl-next-door’. With superb 3D graphics and an ultra-responsive and realistic environment this title is hugely popular in the West as well as across Asia.
In this VR Kanojo review, we take a closer look at this popular eroge game, including what to expect, how to play and where to download this tite.
The Eroge Social Simulation Game
Released in 2017 by the Japanese studio Illusion, VR Kanojo is the first eroge game developed for a native English audience by the company.
Founded in 2001 Illusion are one of the top adult game developers in Japan and until recently if you wanted to play one of their bestselling games in English you’d have to wait until a fan developed a translation.
But, since the launch of FAKKU and the Honey Select Unlimited platform, Illusion has changed its policy. All good news for fans of authentic eroge games and this title is certainly something special.
Often accused of being a rip-off of the Playstation’s Summer Project (BANDAI NAMCO Studios), VR Kanojo is actually a straight development of Illusion’s own (and original) game, Kanojo.
Both the original (released in 2010) and this advanced VR version are based around the same gameplay.
Basically, you get to hang out with the main character, Sakura Yuuhi, an archetypal Japanese fantasy ‘girl-next-door’.
All of the action takes place in her bedroom and in the original game this was pretty limited as far as fun goes. However, in VR the experience is definitely heightened, delivering a pretty realistic encounter.
The point of the game?
Well, VR Kanoko isn’t really a gaming kind of game and you won’t have to complete missions, level up or follow any narrative.
Instead, what you get here is a VR experience in which you can interact with the main character. This includes being able to answer questions by shaking/nodding your head as well as touching objects and accessories and changing Sakura Yuuhi’s outfits.
“You’ll practically feel her breath on your cheek and the warmth of her fingers on your arm as you laugh and talk the day away.”
And, as an adult game, there’s so much more to the interactions that just chatting and this is where VR Kanojo really differs from Summer Project! Players can orchestrate full (but virtual) sex, blowjobs and manual stimulation and have Sakura give them a private XXX show.
In short, you are buying into a virtual reality GFE and the more time you spend with Sakura the better the experience and the more intimate you can get.
Interestingly, the game has had some curious developments over its shelf life and Illusion collaborated with a startup company in 2017 to develop ‘smellovision’. The attachment hasn’t been adopted but the Vaqso VR tech was designed to allow users to be able to smell Sakura’s stockings!
How To Play VR Kanojo
Handily, Illusion has produced a full manual (in English) to accompany this game and you can find this through their official website.
Once you’ve downloaded your game you’ll have to set up your headset and tracking and learn how to navigate the game.
Some operations differ depending on what VR headset you are using but most controls are the same:
- When an ‘Attention Mark’ appears on screen the game will only progress if you focus on this spot for a time.
- When asked a question, you can choose ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ simply by shaking or nodding your head.
- Your hands will appear in the game when you are using Oculus Touch or Vive Controller.
- Ending a scene can be selected if you open the Config menu or focus on the ‘Exit’ within the game.
The main screen allows you to select a scene or head straight to the wardrobe so you can change Sakura’s clothes.
And, as you advance in the game, you can start the H mode which launches the ‘Sexy Lesson’.
Here you can touch and caress Sakura using the ‘Action’ menu and she will respond to your VR controllers.
Kissing Sakura is pretty easy and all you have to do is lean in close to her and she will automatically respond.
As for more intimate physical contact, this is all controlled using your VR controller but keep an eye on the ‘Heart’ mark to judge Sakura’s pleasure levels.
During sex you can change up positions by grabbing a part of Sakura’s body and shifting her into:
- Doggy (grasp her back)
- Missionary (grasp her knee)
- Cowgirl (grasp her arm)
You control the speed of penetration using your VR controller and, when you are ready to ejaculate, you can also choose between creampie or bukkake. Just maximise the speed and you can fire on demand!

VR Kanojo Review: Best Virtual Reality Eroge Game?
There’s no getting away from the fact that the main character in VR Kanojo is based on one of the most popular Japanese fantasies. Yes, with those knee-high socks, short tartan skirt and pristine white blouse, Sakura is based on a schoolgirl character.
However, Steam goes to some length to affirm that the characters in this game are all aged 18+.
That aside, there is not much to dislike about the game.
What you are buying into is a VR sex sim game but, more than that, you are getting an intimate experience with a virtual girlfriend.
Part of this is enhanced by the location setting and being in a girl’s bedroom adds an electric charge of excitement and certainly plays into those traditional taboos.
Fans of the game are certainly fans of more than just the sex and most report becoming slightly obsessed with just spending time with Sakura.
And, let’s face it, if you are simply looking for realistic sex simulation then there are games which can offer much better graphics with far more choice of positions and locations.
For us, VR Kanojo is a doorway to a fantasy world in which you can kick off your shoes, lie back on a single bed and indulge yourself in a slow and easy relationship. Of course, the best part is that, when you’re done chatting and have finally shaken off the grime of your day, you can experience something a little less SFW.
For our money, VR Kanojo isn’t for everyone and there is definitely something about this bright and cheerful character that will annoy some people more than it will excite them.
But, for anyone who shares that popular Japanese fantasy of a taboo relationship that is less complicated then this little game is perfect.
